Nancy Gruver: "Girls: Truthtellers and Feminists," Friday March 4th

Nancy Gruver: “Girls: Truthtellers and Feminists”

Friday, March 4, 2011
3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Sarah Doyle Women’s Center Lounge
26 Benevolent St. (corner of Brown St. and Benevolent St. across from Keeney)

Nancy Gruver is the founder and CEO of New Moon Girls, a safe social network and magazine for girls 8 and up. She started the magazine in 1992 as a healthy alternative to the typical teen magazine that tells girls how to think, act, and look. In contrast, she pioneered the “share the power method” that gives girls the opportunity to write, create, and choose what ultimately becomes part of the finished product.

Gruver will speak on the power of girls to recognize equality and inequality and to get involved in activism that will change their world. Q & A will follow.

She is also the Board of Directors Chair of the non-profit Mind on the Media and helped start the Turn Beauty Inside Out campaign.

Gruver wrote How to Say It to Girls: Communicating with Your Growing Daughter (2004) and has also been published in Catching a Wave: Reclaiming Feminism for the 21st Century, edited by Rory Dicker and Alison Piepmeier (2003). You can also find her work on her blog for parents, Daughters.com.

Event sponsored by Women’s History Month, WSAB, and Department of Modern Culture and Media. Sarah Doyle Women’s Center is handicapped accessible. To ask questions or request assistance or accommodations, please email amanda_kozar@brown.edu or call Sarah Doyle Women’s Center at 401-863-2189.
